EMG Driven Musculoskeletal Simulation of the Human Lower Body: A Biomechanical and Electromyographyic Study

EMG Driven Musculoskeletal Simulation of the Human Lower Body: A Biomechanical and Electromyographyic Study Review

Predictive musculoskeletal models have the potential to positively influence the orthopaedic management of movement pathologies. A scalable geometric model of the lower-body was defined from an adult database. A Hill-type EMG driven dynamic computational muscle model was developed and validated against published and new experimental data. A lower-body simulation model was constructed incorporating skeletal joint definitions, musculotendon actuators, passive joint dynamics and ground reactions forces. A 13-muscle EMG driven inverse-kinetic simulation model of knee flexion-extension contraction was developed and evaluated using dynamometric data covering a wide- range of contraction speeds and modes (isokinetic, isotonic, eccentric, and isometric) for five able- bodied adult male subjects. Both shape and transfer function based Hill-type muscle models were evaluated. For the transfer function-based model, across all subjects the average correlations ranged between r = 0.61-0.77 and average RMS error = 21- 29%. For the shape function-based model, the average correlations ranged between r = 0.76-0.92 and an average RMS error = 25-31%.

EMG trapezius muscle activity pattern in string players: Part II-Influences of basic body awareness therapy on the violin playing technique [An ... Journal of Industrial Ergonomics]

EMG trapezius muscle activity pattern in string players: Part II-Influences of basic body awareness therapy on the violin playing technique [An ... Journal of Industrial Ergonomics] Review

This digital document is a journal article from International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
This study used electromyography (EMG) to investigate if violinists could play with a greater variation in the trapezius muscle activity pattern after an 8-week training program with Basic Body Awareness Therapy (Basic BAT), as compared with a reference group. Five professional orchestra violinists who trained Basic BAT were compared to nine violinists working as violin teachers or music students at higher education level who did not take part in any training. The trapezius muscle activity, while playing a piece of music, was monitored by bilateral surface EMG before and after the 8-week training period. Exposure Variation Analysis (EVA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) were used for the EMG analyses. No significant differences were found in the trapezius muscle activation between the Basic BAT-trained group and the reference group. The training group perceived positive changes in breathing, muscular tension, postural control and concentration mainly during practice sessions. Musicians might benefit from practicing warming up, taking regular pauses to recover and proper working technique in activities other than playing an instrument. Relevance to industry: Proper work technique, work postures and movements are important to prevent neck and shoulder problems. This study shows a pedagogical approach to modify posture and bodily reactions during work tasks.

The 2009-2014 Outlook for EEG/EMG/brain Function Monitoring Equipment in Europe

The 2009-2014 Outlook for EEG/EMG/brain Function Monitoring Equipment in Europe Review

This econometric study covers the outlook for eeg/emg/brain function monitoring equipment in Europe. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-a-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the countries in Europe). This study gives, however, my estimates for the latent demand, or the P.I.E. for eeg/emg/brain function monitoring equipment in Europe. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the national markets of Europe. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

Emgs: Webster's Timeline History, 1951 - 2007

Emgs: Webster's Timeline History, 1951 - 2007 Review

Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Emgs," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Emgs in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Emgs when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Emgs, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain.

Atlas of Electromyography

Atlas of Electromyography Review

The Atlas of Electromyography is a visually alluring book which provides high quality anatomical illustrations of skeletal muscles that include nerve, plexus, and root supply; photographs of each muscle in healthy subjects to enable the practitioner to identify the optimum site of EMG needle insertion; clinical features of the major conditions affecting peripheral nerves; and electrodiagnostic strategies for confirming suspected lesions of the peripheral nervous system.
The atlas is divided into sections on the major peripheral nerves. Each nerve is illustrated and its anatomy reviewed in the text. The authors provide a detailed outline of the clinical conditions and entrapment syndromes that affect the nerve, including a list of etiologies, clinical features, and electrodiagnostic strategies used for each symdrome. Each muscle supplied by the peripheral nerve is shown as an anatomical illustration with a corresponding human photograph. The text provides information about the muscle origin, tendon insertion, voluntary activation maneuver, and site of optimum needle insertion. The needle insertion point is identified in both the anatomical illustration and the corresponding photographs. This assures that pertinent bone, muscular, and soft tissue landmarks can be used to guide the electromyographer to a specific point on the skin. Potential pitfalls associated with the needle insertion are added, usually noting adjacent muscles or structures that may be mistakenly entered. Clinical correlates pertinent to the muscle being examined are also provided. The tlas of Electromyography serves as an anatomical guide for practitioners of electromyography and neurologists, as well as residents i neurology, physical medicine, and rehabilitation.

The interest in and use of electromyography (EMG) have grown significantly in recent years. Researchers have found numerous clinical and research uses for EMG, including biofeedback, gait analysis, and clinical diagnosis for neuromuscular disorders. Yet, until now, few sources have been available to help novices understand the characteristics of the instrumentation, signal analysis techniques, and appropriate EMG applications.

Essentials of Electromyography provides the perfect starting point for those who plan to use EMG because it aids in the comprehension of issues such as handling noise contamination to the area, slope, and variability of the EMG signal. The text is also a solid reference for practitioners who use EMG, including exercise scientists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and motor development specialists.

The book contains six detailed chapters discussing the anatomy and physiology of muscle, bioelectricity, EMG tools, signal processing, force–fatigue relations, and gait. Through Essentials of Electromyography, readers will

-learn both fundamental and advanced concepts regarding the principles of using EMG, including the use and abuse of electrical recordings of muscle potentials;

-discover the physiological basis of EMG signals, which is explained at an introductory level; and

-explore relevant topics such as electrode configuration, advanced signal processing theory, and locations for extracting EMG information.

The text provides a solid review of the relationship between human anatomy and EMG as well as how EMG is applied to clinical areas. It showcases over 160 figures and many qualitative explanations to communicate the principles of EMG, the biophysical basis of EMG, and the appropriate applications of EMG. It also contains appendixes for readers with a deeper understanding of EMG and stronger backgrounds in math; those readers will have the opportunity to work through more detailed EMG calculations. The book is heavily referenced and illustrated with diagrams showing electrical circuits and the progression of electrical impulses.

Essentials of Electromyography--which is also available as an e-book—will help readers learn how to apply EMG for biofeedback, back pain, sport activities, and other uses. The text pulls together information scattered in books and articles among the numerous disciplines that use EMG as a tool. With its clear presentation of the concepts and applications of EMG, Essentials of Electromyography will prove to be a valuable text for practitioners and students alike.
